Tired Lakers Need More Sleep

As students transition into the spring semester, students at BL are starting to sleep less and less due to their extracurricular activities and homework. At the start of the year, students were eager to start strong, but as summer approaches, students are finding themselves sleeping less.

With sports, homework, and other extracurricular activities, BL students believe that sleep is the least important part of their school year, even if it should be the most.

“Sleep is the least important to me with my heavy course load and stuff I have to do outside of school,” junior Gideon Endalkachew said. “I think that sleep should be the most important though; I sleep like four hours a night.”

Students like freshman Blake Shepherd and senior Regan Chasney believe that sleep should not come before all the work is done.

“Homework is obviously most important to me so I try to get it done early so I can go to sleep earlier,” Chasney said. “I don’t sacrifice work for sleep, though.”

Shepherd, who tries to do homework during every free and study hall, said, “When I get home at around 5:30 from practice, I have time to do homework so I rarely sacrifice sleep time.”

The average amount of sleep that teenagers get is between 7 and 7 ¼ hours. However, they need between 9 and 9 ½ hours (studies show that most teenagers need exactly 9 ¼ hours of sleep),” according to nationwideschildren.org.

Some students, such as Shepherd and Chasney, have learned to manage their time well in order to achieve eight and nine hours of sleep per night, respectively. When Shepherd and Chasney come into school every day, they both “feel fresh” as long as they get their 8-9 hours per night.

However, students like Endalkachew have yet to master their time management. With only 20 hours of sleep per week, finding the energy to get through the school day can be hard to find.

“The lack of sleep does not allow me to 100% focus in the class,” Endalkachew said. “It doesn’t allow me to fully understand the material in an effective way.”

Sleep has taken a backseat to education. With sports ending at 5:30-6:00 p.m., school starting at 8:00 a.m., students have only about 13 hours at home, minus the drive time. Then take nine hours for sleep, and students only have four hours to eat, do all their homework, shower, and relax.

With the heavy course load and copious amount of extracurricular activities students are involved in due to the small population, they deserve more than four hours to do homework, spend time with family, and relax.

The Beverage That Kills Our Youth

Drinks service the needs of all people; however, some are more harmful than others. When one thinks of a drink, it is common to think of a favorite juice or soda.  But, alcohol is the deadliest of them all.

In most states, the legal drinking age is 21. This age is set because scientists have discovered that by this age a person’s brain has developed enough to handle the alcoholic content consumed.

This does not mean that anyone 21 or older can handle any amount of alcohol, but this does mean it is more manageable.

With today’s technology, it is easier for teenagers to get their hands on alcohol. Teens are able to create fake IDs or can just simply ask someone to purchase it for them.

Alcohol can cause much harm to underage drinkers. According to a blog posted on cdc.gov, “Alcohol harms the brain’s development. It can also cause death due to alcohol poisoning.”

Although it may seem cool to drink with friends on the weekends, or just drink in general, it is very harmful. This a problem that is very prevalent in American society.

35% of teenagers drink. 15% are binge drinkers, and 20% just drink casually on the weekends or occasions, according to an article published on toosmarttoostart.com.

Some teens have deeper issues; many teens drink because they are depressed or lonely. Alcohol may seem as an escape route from real life. This depression can cause things such as tobacco use, academic failure, and illicit drug use to occur.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, not only can alcohol cause academic failure and drug use, it can cause risky sexual behavior. It may cause early sexual behaviors or teenage pregnancies.

Alcohol tolerance is different for everyone, but the effect is very well the same. Alcohol can cause a person to fall out of the right state of mind.

According to the U.S Department of Justice, underage drinking costs society $68 billion, one dollar for every drink consumed. This includes medical bills, income loss, and costs from pain and suffering.

It is impossible for lawmakers to catch every underage drinker, but everything begins with the parents. Parents play the biggest role in children’s lives because when they are born, they are the first people they see.

Also, they must lead by example. Teenagers need to have a clear understanding of the dangers that lurk inside an alcoholic beverage.

Pink Pineapple Could Help Save Lives

There could be a new breakthrough to help prevent cancer hitting the shelves. Not the pharmaceutical shelves, but the shelves in the grocery store. There could be fruits that help prevent cancer.

There is a company from the United Kingdom and the United States called Del Monte that has figured out a way to modify pineapple to have lycopene, an antioxidant compound that gives tomatoes their red color and may have a role in preventing cancer.

They do this by using GMOs. GMO stands for a genetically modified organism. They modify the pineapple’s genetic material by using genetic engineering techniques.

Del Monte already released the pink pineapple in stores in Europe, but they are trying to get the pineapple into stores in the United States. This could take a long time because the United States has a tougher policy than Europe.

The United States FDA, which stands for the Food and Drug Administration, has more policies on what can be modified or not. They do a lot more testing to make sure the products do not have any bad side effects that could cause long term illness or even death.

Del Monte is waiting to hear back from the FDA to see if the pink pineapple can be placed in grocery stores in the U.S.

This is not the first food that has been modified to make food products healthier and have more benefits.

According to Nola.com, “AgroSciences are separately developing modified soybean, canola and sunflower oils with fewer saturated fats and more Omega-3 fatty acids. The Florida citrus company Southern Gardens is using a spinach gene to develop genetically engineered orange trees that could potentially resist citrus greening disease, which is devastating the Florida orange crop. Okanagan Specialty Fruits Inc., the company that created the non-browning apples, is also looking at genetically engineering peaches, cherries and apples to resist disease and improve quality.”

These genetically modified fruits could be a new type of medicine, but there will always be people that are skeptical of the new food. People are worried that using science to modify food could cause problems to the body since the food is not naturally grown.  But according to Michael Firko who oversees the Agriculture Department’s regulation of genetically modified organisms, or GMOs said, “I think once people see more of the benefits they will become more accepting of the technology,” so who knows what will come in the future, but pink pineapples may be the new miracle fruit.

From pink pineapple to purple tomatoes, next wave of GMO foods will have health benefits

The Practice of Yoga

Yoga is a Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline. Many people use yoga for relaxation, health, and sports. Yoga helps relieve stress and un-clutter the mind and helps an individual become more focused.

Yoga is known to relax and calm the body and mind. Yoga also increases flexibility, mental focus, stress relief, lung capacity, longevity, endurance, and strength. Its positions are used for stress relievers to certain areas of the body.

The child’s pose, for instance, is known for relieving stress and calming the nervous system. The supine twist is known for opening the diaphragm and improving breathing. Lastly, legs up the wall with extended exhale is known for calming the mind.

All three poses can be used to help get a better sleep. Instead of going to sleep stressed out, before getting into bed, try a pose. It could be the catalyst for better sleeping.

Less sleep equals more stress, and the body doesn’t get enough time to repair on a cellular level. Studies show that with only eight weeks of yoga, a person may have better sleep and both slumber and quality will be improved. It will also help with full range of motion.

While working out, people might not be stretching. That allows the body to loosen up and relieve tension. Doing yoga helps get a full range of motion for every muscle in the body.

For an athlete, yoga would be a good choice because it also helps prevent injuries. Yoga is an efficient way to connect all of the body movements and muscles together. Yoga allows a body to raise its heartbeat, strengthen the muscles, and lengthen them out all at once.

Yoga allows the mind to change in ways that can help the overall health of a person. It makes the mind appreciate all the things it can do for the body.

Yoga opens people’s mindsets to different things.

Yoga also prevents the body from having injuries. By practicing positions and stretching in yoga, the body gets comfortable with the movements.

Soles of Pain, How to Relieve It

People experience pain every day, including in the feet.

Jim Keim, a mobility instructor  or the Maryland School for the Blind, said he “very much so” experience pain in his feet while walking around and working with his students. Little do people with feet pain know that much of this pain is caused by their shoes, specifically the sole or insole of the shoe. The average shoe is made by a machine and has a flat insole.

Although some people have flat feet and don’t have a problem with the factory insoles, many people have curved feet. This creates a problem where unnecessary stress is put on the heal and toes which causes the user discomfort. There is a very simple solution to this: create an insole that is made to fit all different types of feet. As luck would have it, there are three different companies who have come up with solutions to these problems.

Ortholite is the first company. Their motto is “comfort from the inside out.” Their latest insole line is called Impressions. This sole is a foam that conforms to the foot when stepped on so the weight of the body will be evenly distributed over the foot. This is also a type of memory foam meaning it will spring back after pressure is removed from the foam.

The next company is Dr. Scholl’s with their Active Series Insoles. These insoles were made to reduce the stress in everyday life to prevent Runners Knee, shin splints, and Plantar Fasciitis in the fitness world. The insole was designed with three protection zones as shown in the photo below. The first zone, the ball of the foot, helps distribute pressure throughout push-off. Zone two, the arch of the foot, improves transition of weight from landing to push-off. Lastly, zone three, the heel of the foot, helps absorb the impact of the landing.

The final company is called Footprint Insoles. Their newest line of insoles is called the Game Changers. As shown in the picture below, this not only helps the foot, but the person’s posture and his ankles as well. These insoles were meant for people like skateboarders who put a lot of stress on their feet. The insoles help cushion the blow of the impacts of landing, running, jumping, and other strenuous activities involving feet.

The pain from the feet can be easily resolved by getting new insoles. This is the easiest solution, and by spending a few dollars, people could be pain free.

Deadly Trick-Or-Treat

Halloween is easily one of the deadliest nights of the year. There are large numbers of drunk drivers coming home from parties and gatherings. With dangerous people on the roads, there are thousands of little kids running on the streets. This sets up a recipe for disaster.

Because of this deadly night, there were 15 people killed and 9 injured. Not all however were children; many were parents and guardians of the kids who were trying to make sure their loved ones were safe.

On October 31st in Santa Ana, California, there were three 13 year old girls all killed in a drunk driving accident. Two of the three were twins and were dead on the spot. The third girl was not dead on contact, but passed away before she received help.

Police believe the driver as well as the passengers were drunk, but have not yet found who it was. It was a hit and run accident, and supposedly it was two men in the car. When people tried to stop them, the men drove away quickly. Later on, a few miles away, the car was found with blood on the hood. However, there was no sign of the men according to LAtimes.com.

Only fourteen minutes away, a sixty-five year old man was struck and killed by a driver while walking with his four year old. The driver was sober and cooperated with the police.

In addition to that, across the country in New York City, a three year old child was killed and a sixteen year old was injured. The driver was a 77-year old who fell asleep at the wheel and struck the two kids while swerving off the road.

North of the border in Vancouver, a six, seven, and 30 year old were hit by a 47 year old driver. The driver was very intoxicated and hopped a curb to strike the three on a sidewalk. Thankfully, there were no deaths.

All over the country there were deaths, including in Orlando, Florida, when a two year old climbed out of his stroller and was hit and killed by a sober driver.

Next, in Winnetka, Illinois, there was a four year old boy who was hit by yet another drunk driver on Halloween. The boy was hit and dragged nearly 50 feet until the car came to a complete stop. The boy was in critical condition and was taken to the hospital in a helicopter. The boy stayed there for weeks and was recently released and is making a full recovery according to buzzfeed.com.

Lastly, a family of four was hit in Phoenix, Arizona; there were no deaths or serious injuries.

According to nytimes.com, nearly 50% of crashes on Halloween are because of intoxicated drivers.

Halloween is one of the most deadly days in America according to USAtoday.com. The drunk drivers need to be stopped. Also, sober drivers should be especially careful on this night.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine. Although a wide variety of ideas are shown by chiropractors, Chiropractors examine the structure and function of the spine, along with its effects on the nervous system and what they believe to be its role in health and disease (http://www.spine-health.com/treatment/chiropractic/what-a-chiropractor).

Some chiropractors say spinal manipulation, which are called adjustments, can have an effect on lifetime ailments such as asthma. Chiropractic philosophy believes in a self healing body. They heavily suggest exercise, good eating habits, and  an overall healthy lifestyle (Dr. Santangelo).

So how did chiropractic ever get started? A man named Palmer thought that disfunction in the spine, which he called vertebral subluxations, interfered with how the body works and its ability to heal itself. This idea was later used by his son, B.J. Palmer, and was crucial in providing a base for showing the difference between chiropractic from regular medicine. Palmer said that the nervous system controlled health (Dr. Santangelo).

Chiropractic believes that that the healthcare system we have today is wrong. Putting things into the body to help heal the body will cause dysfunction throughout the nervous system. This will cause the nervous system to have to fight something else besides the unhealthy body. Instead, by just a few spinal adjustments, the nervous system will be helped in its fight against the unhealthy body.

Chiropractic adjustment rarely causes discomfort. Patients may sometimes experience mild soreness or aching following treatment, just like any exercise, that usually resolves within 12 to 48 hours (Dr. Santangelo).

In many cases, such as lower back pain, chiropractic care may be the primary method of treatment. When other medical conditions exist, chiropractic care may complement or support medical treatment by relieving the skeletal dysfunction with in  the condition.

Doctors of chiropractic may examine patients through examination, laboratory testing, diagnostic imaging and other ways  to determine when chiropractic treatment is appropriate or when it is not appropriate.  Chiropractors will tell their patients when chiropractic is not the way to deal with what they have. They will suggest other methods of treatment to help make the patient healthier.

Chiropractic care is a safe way to guarantee a healthier lifestyle. They offer many suggestions to get to the same goal. A healthier person. Today, many people trust the healthcare system without even knowing what it does. But, with chiropractic, the clinician’s first step is telling you about his practice.
