With the fall sports season coming to an end, those who participate in winter sports are getting ready for the new season. Many athletes and teams have been working out and getting ready for the winter sports season for a couple of weeks now.
The varsity ice hockey team is expecting to do well this year after missing the playoffs last year by only one goal. According to senior captain Travis Smith, the hockey team will be “leaps and bounds better than last year.” They are returning every single player from last year.
Returning every single player is a very rare thing in the world of high school sports. Senior captain JP Barbeau thinks that it will play a huge role in the success of the team this year. There are also a couple of freshmen expected to have an impact on the team.
Freshmen Tommy Ozonoff and Adam Schuster are expected to do big things on the ice this year for the Lakers. Both have been playing hockey for several years, which makes them some of the more experienced players on the team despite only being freshmen.
The basketball team is also expecting to have a good season as well.
They are coming off an 8-8 conference record last year when they lost in the first round of the playoffs. The basketball team has lost three seniors and a freshman who transferred. “Losing these guys is pretty big considering two of them were starters,” said junior Cam Spencer.
Even though they have lost two starters, the team should have plenty of experienced players to replace them. “Last year, we only had three seniors, and this year we will have seven or so,” said Spencer. The team also has a strong group of juniors returning.
The hardest team to beat in the league this year will be John Carroll. They are led by their point guard Immanuel Quickley who is committed to play basketball at Kentucky. In order to beat John Carroll and do well this year, the boys need to play as a team and understand their roles on the team.
Members of the wrestling team are not as optimistic for their season as members of the hockey and basketball teams.
According to senior wrestler Mac Alban, the wrestling team did below average last year. He expects to have a similar season this year. The team will only be losing one senior: “Losing Evan Gaines is very significant and the team will feel his loss,” said Alban.
Alban said that in order to turn the wrestling team around they need football players to join. He also said that they need people who are willing to commit themselves to the team.
Similar to the wrestling team, the squash team is expecting to have a tough season.
“We had a total of 12 players, and we lost 11”, said the only returning squash player Logan Thomas. Last year, the team was able to compete in every game last year except for Gilman and Mcdonough.
Being unable to find a lot of people interested in playing squash makes it tough for them to compete with the likes of Gilman and McDonough. This year the team will have to rely heavily on the play of Thomas and freshman John Bryan. Thomas said that the most realistic team to beat for them is St. Paul’s.
