In early February 2017, Brandon Bradsher and Jaylin Andrews each bucketed their 1,000th career point on the basketball court.
Bradsher, a senior, tallied his 1,000th point on Friday, February 3, 2017, against Archbishop Curley with a three-point shot in the third quarter. Bradsher has been on the varsity basketball team since his freshman year and has been a consistent starter since his sophomore year.
“I achieved something important in BL history. I felt legendary at that moment when my shot went in,” Bradsher said.
1,000 career points was never a goal for Bradsher when he started his basketball career at BL. “I wanted to win a championship, which we did my sophomore year, and then make the A Conference playoffs this year,” Bradsher said.
“When I was told I was approaching 1,000 points, I really wanted to pass it. Now I’m just honored to be one of nine guys who have scored 1,000 points in a Boys’ Latin uniform,” Bradsher said.
On Saturday, February 11, 2017, Andrews, a junior, drained his 1,000th career point against archrival St. Paul’s.
“I was stressed going into the game. I knew I only needed nine more points,” Andrews said. “It’s an honor to be one of the nine guys who have hit 1,000 points in a Laker uniform,” he added.
Andrews has been on the varsity team since his freshman year and has seen significant time on the floor throughout his high school career.
In just six short years, Head Coach Cliff Rees has had three players reach 1,000 points.
“We’ve been playing basketball for a long time here at BL. It’s extraordinary for Brandon and Jaylin to do it in the same year,” Boys’ Latin Athletic Director Michael Thomas said.
“It’s exciting to be a part of,” Assistant Coach Jimmy Morrissey said. “It’s a reflection of a high level of success, a lot of things have to go right to score 1,000 points. It also says a lot about the team’s success,” Morrissey added.
The points record at BL is held by Kevin Waters, ’77. Waters racked up 1,446 points during his career at BL. With his senior year on the horizon, Andrews looks forward to the opportunity to rewrite the record books and become the all-time points scorer at BL.
