On February 27th, Boys’ Latin athletes started official practices for lacrosse, baseball, tennis, and golf.
The lacrosse team is coming off of a heartbreaking season in which they lost the championship to McDonogh, but they seem confident about the upcoming season.
“I do [feel like we should win the championship]. We always have a chance because we have the mentality that we should never lose. If we play the way we can then there should be no problems for us,” commented senior leader Luke Shilling. “[We] just need to do the little things right and work hard. Practice hard and get better every day.”
The lacrosse team at BL has been ranked tenth in the country in the preseason according to Inside Lacrosse.
“We don’t even look into the rankings in the preseason. Nobody has played so they mean nothing,” said Shilling.
The baseball team is coming off of a very successful season in which they won the championship against Severn, and they seem poised to repeat.
“We have a lot of returning upperclassmen and young kids with experience,” said senior captain Mark Lopez. “I think this can be the best baseball season and team BL has ever had. Not only will we be playing teams in our conference, but it will be fun to play A conference teams like Gilman and Calvert Hall to see how good we really are.”
“I think senior leadership is our key to success. We need to keep a winning mentality at all times,” commented Lopez.
The baseball team is blessed with a very strong senior class this year including four starters who were on the team as underclassmen: Mark Lopez, Marquise Washington, Matt Purnell, and Zach Grace.
While the tennis team did not make it to the championships last year, they still had a very successful season and look even better this year.
“A Lot of other teams have graduated a lot of star players when we only graduated three. Also, we have a German exchange student David joining the team this year,” said senior captain Jimmy Magee. “Gilman [will be our biggest competition] no doubt. They are the defending champs and they still have a lot of good young talent.”
“The key [for us] is to have dedicated practices and intense focus. We also can’t be taking anyone for granted,” commented Magee.
The golf team is also coming off a great season in which they moved down to the B conference and won the championship.
“We didn’t lose any seniors last year and only Cam Spencer [a sophomore] left so we are feeling confident that we can repeat,” commented senior captain Garrett Glaeser. “We just need to to keep doing what we are doing and keep practicing and playing and we should be good.”
The golf team will have a new coach after Mr. Wilson left last year.
“I’m excited to see what Mr. Franklin has to bring to the table replacing Mr. Wilson as coach,” said Glaeser.
