The Cleveland Indians clinched a spot in the World Series on Wednesday with their 3-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, but if they want to bring home a World Series ring, they are going to have to go through the team of destiny themselves, The Chicago Cubs.
“Last night I dreamed that I was playing shortstop 4 the @Indians in the World Series and we won #cantwait #WinningisEverything #Lindor12BC,” tweeted by Indians shortstop Francisco Lindor two years ago according to Fox 8 in Cleveland. Lindor was only a minor leaguer at the time, but now his dream is becoming a reality.
The Indians have not won a World Series since 1948 and haven’t been to one since 1997 when they lost to the Florida Marlins. The city itself had not one major sports championship since 1964 until Lebron James and the Cavaliers won the NBA Championship against the Golden State Warriors.
Cleveland isn’t the only team who hasn’t won in a while; The Chicago Cubs, the NL favorites, haven’t won a World Series since 1908! That was 108 years ago! They also haven’t been to a World Series since 1945, three years before Cleveland won their last World Series.
The Indians won the ALCS on the back of their rock solid bullpen led by
Andrew Miller. Miller, who was also the ALCS MVP, boasted an ERA (earned run average) of 0.00, 14 strikeouts, and three hits. Miller was all but unhittable during the ALCS and he, along with the rest of the bullpen, have led Cleveland to the World Series.
The Cubs, on the other hand, have been boosted by their star-studded players with a total of eight all-stars, the best starting rotation in the game, and the third most powerful lineup in the game. The Cubs will be a very formidable foe for the Indians.
According to Jose Bautista, the Blue Jays all-star right fielder, there were some circumstances that prevented the Blue Jays from winning. According to Kyle Newport of Bleacher Report, these circumstances were the fact that he thinks the umpires were rigging the game. While the umpires were not the best, the calls seemed to be bad both ways.
The Indians had a nice response to the accusations pictured to the right.
On October 25, 2016, the Indians beat the Cubs in game one of the World Series. Corey Kluber pitched six very strong innings with nine strikeouts for the Indians before giving the ball to Andrew Miller and Cody Allen who closed out the game. The score was 6-0 and Cleveland now has a one game lead in the World Series.
It’s not clear who will win, but one thing is certain: baseball fans everywhere are ready for this showdown.
Updated: The current standing for the World Series is three games to one with Cleveland in the lead.
