Ravens Sign Tight End Benjamin Watson

On March 10, 2016, the Baltimore Ravens signed tight end Ben Watson to a two-year contract. Ben Watson is a proven veteran who will help the team immensely on the field. The aspect he might help the most in, however, is leadership among the team as well as the community.

Prior to signing a contract with the Ravens, Watson had a bit of a history with Baltimore. Watson is known for helping the community according to espn.com; he was a recipient of the Call to Courage award.

Watson took notice of the riots that occurred in Baltimore last year in response to police mistreatment of citizens. He wrote a heartfelt message following this event saying, “Tonight I see ‘smoke,’ but we must address the fire. The response that we are watching is just ‘smoke’ from years of hopelessness. After each situation the more I am convinced that the love of God for our fellow brothers and sisters who were created in His image, is our only hope for reconciliation. But the only way we can even see him that way is if God illuminates our view and changes our thought process.'”

Watson encouraged others to love all and not fight violence with violence. He plans to bring his perspective on how people should act not only to the team but also to the whole city of Baltimore.

Not only will Watson’s off the field impact be great, but his on-field presence will certainly help the team. He is a veteran who has played in big games, and he will be able to contribute greatly to the offense.

Last year at the age of 35, Watson had a career year. According to espn.com, he was able to corral 74 catches, 825 yards, and six touchdowns while playing with the New Orleans Saints. This impressive set of numbers indicates that Watson will be productive with the Ravens regardless of his age.

This deal also covers holes at the tight end position that were left with an injury to Dennis Pitta and suspension of Nick Boyle. Watson will be an upgrade at this position and will help their offense which relies so heavily on tight ends.

Watson will be an integral part of this offense and team. Hopefully his strong play will enhance the Ravens, and his strong leadership will help guide the Baltimore community in a positive direction.
