On Saturday, May 16, the 140th running of the Preakness Stakes will take place. The race is right here in Baltimore, MD at Pimlico Race Track. The Preakness draws a huge crowd every year including celebrities, professional athletes, and famous singers.
The Preakness annually occurs on the third Saturday in May, which is two weeks following the Kentucky Derby. The race is “nine-and-a-half furlongs (one mile and 3/16)… and has become a yearly staple on the horse racing calendar” (heavy.com).
There will be 12 horses running Saturday in the Preakness. The horses running are: American Pharoah, Dortmund, Firing Line, Materiality, Stanford, Danzig Moon, Competitive Edge, Carpe Diem, Divining Rod, Bodhisattva, Tale of Verve, and Grand Bili.
The top three horses with the best odds are American Pharoah, Firing Line, and Dortmund.
American Pharoah, the winner of the Kentucky Derby, looks to make a run at the Triple Crown. “He has won five straight races and vanquished a strong field in the Kentucky Derby. There is no reason to think he will not come out firing again on Saturday” (nytimes.com). American Pharoah’s odds right now are 5-6.
Firing Line, who finished second in the Kentucky Derby, looks to get back at American Pharoah and beat him in the Preakness. Firing Line “had lost twice narrowly to Dortmund earlier in his career, but reversed that in the Derby, and would have won the race if not for the impressive effort by American Pharoah. He was the second best horse on the day and should be right in the mix again” (nytimes.com). Firing Line’s odds are 5-1.
Dortmund, who finished third at the Kentucky Derby, could have a good shot at winning the Preakness. “He tried to lead the Derby wire-to-wire, which historically is very difficult to do. In the end, he tired and finished third, but it was an impressive effort. The field will be smaller at the Preakness, and the race is a sixteenth of a mile shorter” (nytimes.com). Dortmund’s odds as of now are 11-2.
These three horses are expected to have the greatest impact on the race after having an impressive run at the Kentucky Derby. The 140th running of the Preakness Stakes will be tough with all the competition. But only one question remains, will American Pharoah pull out a win and go for the Triple Crown?
