Clax Experiences Undefeated Season

This year’s Clax season was a very successful season under head coach Mac McDonald. The team finished off the season with a perfect 6-0 record. This year’s Clax season was their first ever undefeated season in Clax history.

The team this year had many talented players on both ends of the field. This year’s Clax team had three college commits, two divisions one commits, and one division three commit.

Their names are Braden Atkinson, a Hopkins commit; Basil Aburn, a Syracuse commit; and lastly, Tyler Steinberg, a Stevenson commit. Braden Atkinson and Basil Aburn led the team in goals and assists this year, and Tyler Steinberg led the league in saves. Atkinson and Aburn joined the team three games into the season.

The team started off the season with a huge win over their rival school Saint Paul’s 9-6. The team’s official twitter page was not keeping stats during this game, so it is unclear who scored.

Then the team faced and beat the Gilman Grayhounds 6-1 with goals from senior Garret Stoler, senior Eliot King, junior Cam Miller, senior Cole Whitehurst, junior all-star Jeremy Greenberg, and freshman Basil Aburn.

Next, the Clax team played Loyola. The team went out there trying to avenge a loss from a year ago. The team beat Loyola 17-7, with five goals from Miller, four each from Aburn and Atkinson, one goal from Manzoni, and one goal from Elliot King.

Some people might think the team ran up the score, but they were just getting pay back for coach McDonald since Loyola scored 22 goals on the Lakers one year ago in fresh-soph lacrosse. Then in the fourth game, the team played Calvert Hall. The game ended at half time because the referees called the game.

They called the game because Calvert Hall had three ejections. The referees were looking out for the Lakers safety and didn’t want anyone to get hurt. Due to the fact that all the Hall wanted to do was lay big hits and hurt the Lakers, the referees called the game.

The game ended with the Lakers getting the win 9-4, with Braden Atkinson having two goals, Austin Kowalewski having three goals, Basil having three goals, and Dudley having one goal. With the championship in the Lakers’ eyes, all they had to do was to get by Gilman again and beat the best team in the league Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

The Lakers blew out Gilman 12-3 with senior Ritchie Wiklund having a goal off of a crazy dodge and finish. Manzoni had two goals, Basil had a goal, and even the goalie Tyler Steinberg had a goal. The next game was the most important game of the season.

The team was playing Fellowship of Christian Athletes.  Last year, FCA killed BL Clax. It looked like that was going to happen again since FCA jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead.

But then with the help of Basil, the team got their first goal and never looked back. Boys’ Latin ended up beating FCA 9-7 with Basil having four goals, Bo Dudley having one, Miller having one, Atkinson having two, and Martin having one. This year meant a lot to the seniors who have been on the Clax team for two years.

Not only did it feel good for the players, but also for Coach McDonald. Coach has been trying to achieve the goal of being National Clax Champion for years, and this was the year. It is safe to say that Coach McDonald is up there with the great coaches that have coached at Boys’ Latin.
