It is the time of year where the skates are sharpened, the sweaters look brand new, and the sticks are freshly taped. That is right; it is NHL playoff time.
The playoffs started April 13th. The NHL does a 16 team playoff, and every series is the best of seven.
The differences in the playoffs and the regular season is that the teams play a series, and there are no shootouts in the playoffs, only overtimes.
There are two conferences in the NHL playoffs. There is the Western conference and there is the Eastern conference. The teams that made it from the West are the Anaheim Ducks, St. Louis Blues, Nashville Predators, Chicago Blackhawks, Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild, and the Winnipeg Jets.
The teams that made the playoffs from the Eastern Conference are the New York Rangers, Montreal Canadians, Tampa Bay Lighting, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, and the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The first round of the playoffs already happened. The playoffs are now in the second round. Here are the first round results.
The Montreal Canadians beat the Ottawa Senators four games to two. The Tampa Bay Lighting beat the Detroit Red Wings four games to three, and the series went to game seven.
The New York Rangers beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 in the series. The Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders 4-3, and the series went to game seven.
In the Western Conference, the Minnesota Wild beat the St. Louis Blues 4-2, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Nashville Predators 4-2. The Anaheim Ducks beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-0. And in the last series of the first round, the Calgary Flames beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2.
The second round of the playoffs have just started, and they have been exciting just like the first round. The Anaheim Ducks have continued their dominance with still not losing a playoff game this year. And, the Chicago Blackhawks are on the path of knocking out the Minnesota Wild for the third straight year.
It almost seems like every year the Washington Capitals play the New York Rangers in the playoffs. The Rangers usually end up knocking the Caps out of the playoffs, but the Caps are trying to change that. They are winning the series 3-1.
The Tampa Bay Lighting have continued their hot streak of scoring. They are up 3-0 in the series and have proven their offense has no difficulty putting the puck in the back of the net.
People can predict who they think will win, but the only thing they can know for sure is that the rest of the playoffs are going to be crazy and as good as they have been so far.
