Boys’ Latin Lakers Baseball Mid-Season Review

Boys’ Latin’s baseball squad, led by senior Skyler Morris and junior Dom Maggio, is off to an impressive 11-1 start. The team’s only loss was at the hands of John Carrol, who is in the A conference;, Boys’ Latin is in the B conference.

One of the most impressive victories this year for the Lakers was against the predicted number one B conference team, St. Marys. The Lakers defeated this team 4-2 proving to the league they are the team to beat.

Boys’ Latin’s team has shown an immense amount of talent in regard to its pitching staff this year. The Lakers have solid players that have the ability to both start and relieve in a game. The pitching staff is headed by Towson commit Skyler Morris, and Dom Maggio and Justin Ward.

Justin Ward, a first-year varsity player, has impressed in his varsity debut.  He has been a reliable starter for the Lakers matching up well against any opponent he has faced.  Ward has emerged onto the scene letting his pitching ability be known.

The team is also equipped with a powerhouse offense which has propelled them to put up large amounts of runs consistently. The team has won a large amount of games by the slaughter rule, which means a team must have 10 or more runs than the other team after five full innings of play.

One of the team’s greatest strengths is the depth they possess. The entire team has shown flashes of ability including the players who are not consistent starters.

Recently, the Lakers were able to beat Concordia, formerly known as Baltimore Lutheran, 22 to 0 only playing their backup players. They put up 17 runs in the first inning (according to game showing how deep this team truly is.

The Lakers have ambitions of making a championship appearance, and after beating the top teams such as Glenelg and St. Marys, they feel as if nothing can stop them. They continue to work hard in practice in order to achieve their goals.

The last time the Lakers made the championship was two years ago when they were defeated by Glenelg. Since then, they have been working hard to earn another shot at the title.  This year they are not just looking to get in the championship, but they are looking to win it.

Although the Lakers aspire to be champions, they take each game as if it will be their toughest opponent.  The team remains confident no matter the opponent.  The Lakers realize on any given day an upset can occur; this is the reason why they continue to play hard even when they are the clear favorites.

The team has looked very good up to this point, but the season is very long. They are at the mid-point of the year, so the Lakers will look to continue their impressive play which will hopefully lead them to a championship.
