Once Winning Super Bowler Now Spending 9 Years Behind Bars

Former New Orleans Saints safety Darren Sharper pleaded no contest on Monday, March 23, 2015 to drugging and raping two women in Los Angeles as part of a broader plea deal in four states that will send him to federal prison for nine years. Sharper said, “he was entering the plea because it was in his best interest.” He faced up to 33 years in prison if convicted of all counts against him in California.

The former Super Bowl winning safety admitted that he drugged and raped two women in the Hollywood area. Sharper is also being charged for drugging and raping nine other girls in four diffrent states. Those states include Nevada, Louisiana, Arizona, and California. For each rape charge, he will be given 20 years, but his attorney made a deal that Sharper will serve nine years behind bars and will be on probation for the rest of his life.

If Sharper did not take the plea deal and was convicted, he would have faced life in prison in Louisiana and 30 years in Los Angeles. When Sharper was arrested, he was found with the sleeping drug zolpidem. His attorneys said he has had a sleeping problem ever since he was playing in the NFL. But the cops say that the drug is what Sharper was putting in women’s drinks to knock them out.

One of the big concerns of this case was that if Sharper did not take the plea deal, people were worried that he would have gotten off because of his fame as being an NFL star safety. On the flip side, people are arguing that Sharper got off too easy. According to some people, Sharper should have gotten at least 20 years in jail or should have gotten life since he was convicted as a serial rapper.
