Georgia Lacrosse Trip Review

By: Charlie Ikle and Jeremy Greenberg

The varsity lacrosse team has gone to Boca Raton, Florida, for years, but Florida passed a rule that prohibits their teams from playing against non-conference teams.

So, for the first time in years, the team decided to travel to Atlanta instead.  The team stayed at the Marriott in Buckhead, Georgia. With no beach to relax on this year, some free time was spent at the Lenox Mall.

Located across the street from the hotel, the team would travel to the mall after and between practices to eat at the food court and various restaurants.

Also during free time, some would stay at the hotel and play “Super Smash Bros.” on Nintendo 64 or “Fifa 13” on Xbox 360. With no beach town to explore like in Florida, players still found themselves occupied by video games and the town of Buckhead.

On Saturday, March 14, the team traveled to Westminster High School to play their first game in Georgia. The team had a harder time winning this game than they expected. Starting varsity goalie and UNC commit, Jack Pezzulla, stated, “we went down expecting less of a challenge…and we saw that even though they didn’t have the best stick skills, they were very athletic…and we had to adapt to their fast pace of play.”

Logan Wisnauskas added “the field sucked,” which was a hard transition from practicing on turf every day to playing on muddy grass. Wisnauskas also commented that they had a hard hitting team, and “I got rocked.”  The team had a tough time keeping up with Westminster’s fast pace play, but they adjusted and came out with an 11-9 victory.

About halfway through the trip, the boys took a trip to the College Football Hall of Fame.  This was one of the coolest parts of the trip, and before exploring the exhibits, they showed a video in 4K definition. It was the best graphics the team has ever seen, and the video pumped them up for the game.

They also had exhibits as well as interactive activities like broadcasting two people into College GameDay and recording voice overs on play footage. On the big turf field with a regulation field goal, a route running and throwing competition ensued.  The team also enjoyed playing corn hole against each other.

There are a few traditions that upperclassmen enforce for underclassmen and new players to the team.  One is that all new players must get a buzz cut before the spring break trip, or a senior will give them one or a funny haircut.  A handful of freshmen and sophomores left with awful buzzcuts and mullet hybrids.

Another is the quiz on BL lacrosse history that everyone takes before the flight.  Coach Shriver makes these quizzes, and the eight worst grades must be ball boys at practice for the rest of the season.

Lastly, and the most entertaining tradition, is when new members sing a karaoke song in front of the entire team. How funny or well it is done is determined by the returners, and singers will either get clapped off stage or booed.  If booed, the player must sing in front of the team and strangers in the airport.

On Tuesday, March 17, the team traveled to Lovett School to face off in their second game in Georgia. The game started out rough for the Lakers.Lovett had a 5-1 lead during the closing seconds of the first quarter. The team fought back and was up 8-7 at the end of the first half.

The Lakers ended up winning an exciting game 17-14. Jack Pezzulla had a big game making 13 saves.

Pezzulla was not happy with the Lakers performance during the game. He noted, “Even though we beat them…we came out with sloppy defense, allowing one player to score 7 goals. The Lovett game gave us an opportunity to see the flaws in our team, so that way we could recognize them and fix them for future games.”

Overall, it was a much different trip for the team to Georgia this spring.  It was a different atmosphere than Florida, but it was still fun.  Most of the players and coaches were happy with the trip but don’t know where the team will go next year.
