Boys Latin: it’s not just a place we call home. Baltimore native Noah Lennox, better known by his stage name Panda Bear, released a song late last year that has gained national attention. In December, the renowned music magazine Pitchfork labeled it Best New Track and included a feature about the song that includes details about everything from the typical BL haircut to the Stanwick family. Read about it here.
While the song’s name may be all too familiar to us, the music video is certainly new and unexpected. It combines psychedelic imagery that might feel more tuned to the aesthetic at Merriweather Post Pavilion (which is, coincidentally, the title of a very successful alternative album by Lennox’s more well known band Animal Collective) than Lake Avenue.
Nevertheless, the song has made waves. The video has over 750,000 hits on YouTube and has appeared on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. In January, Panda Bear performed the song on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The song has appeared on radio stations all over the country. Any alternative fan would be able to recognize the song.
The song features no substantiated reference to BL other than the title of course. But the title has raised questions. Check out the lyrics and decide for yourself if there’s anything that the Pitchfork article missed.
