Every year during the month of November, men get the chance to grow out their facial hair to raise awareness for cancer. Many cancer patients deal with hair loss, so the point is to let hair grow as long and as wild as it can get it. No Shave November and Movemeber both have been started as a month devoted to raising awareness for cancer.
In 2009, Rebecca Hill and Bret Ringdahl decided on an organization to raise money for cancer awareness. The two decided on a way that anyone, no matter what age, gender, or race, could contribute to. For them, the choice of No Shave November was perfect. The point is to get people to spend their money on charity instead of spending it on razors, or salon visits, at least for the month of November.
The Movemeber Foundation is for men to raise awareness for men’s health issues, like prostate cancer or other male cancers. In 2004 Movember set a goal to literally change the face of men’s health by growing mustaches in support. Movember encourages men to be proactive, increasing early cancer detection and awareness of family cancer history. Movember is the combination of mustache and November, giving men the opportunity to grow out their facial hair.
At Boys’ Latin, although against the dress code, teachers and students get the chance to grow out their facial hair. The first day of school in November, November 3rd to be exact, $20 towards charity will give students a pass on shaving for the rest of the month. But don’t just stop at $20; some donate well above the required amount.
At the end of the month, a competition takes place to see who grew the best facial hair over the month. Anything from mutton chops to handle bar mustaches are found on the multiple faces on the Boys’ Latin campus. The winner of the competition gets to keep his facial hair for the rest of the year. Senior Patrick Coffay won last year and got to keep his beard until January 1st. Sadly, he wasn’t able to keep his beard due to competing on the wrestling squad.
No Shave November and Movember are two great causes for supporting the fight against cancer. This year the Boys’ Latin community is becoming very excited for the upcoming month and not having to shave.
